Three participants text in a predetermined order. The app they use was designed by the artist so that the most recent message cannot be seen. As a result, each participant must respond without knowing what the person immediately before them has said. Under the instruction to “make the conversation work,” the participants have a conversation on a given theme. Because their exchanges often fail to align, they try to guess the unseen statements or give responses suitable in any situation.
In the attempt to avoid awkwardness and maintain smooth communication, their conversation begins to resemble “acting” . In our everyday conversations, we find peace in the order produced by the same back-and-forth exchange of words. But then, how would we speak in a way that is not “acting” ?

3人の実験参加者が、決まった順番でチャットをしています。彼らが用いるアプリは、最新のメッセージが閲覧できないように作家が自ら開発したものです。そのため彼らは、直前の人が何を言ったのかわからないままに発言しなければいけません。参加者は、「会話を成立させてください」という指示の下、与えられたテーマに従ってチャットを続けています。
会話が上手く噛み合わないため、参加者は見えない発言を推測したり、何が来ても良いように相槌を打ったりします。なるべくぎくしゃくしない、円滑さを志向した会話は、さながら「演技」のようです。私たちの普段の会話においても、言葉のキャッチボールが織りなす秩序に安住している瞬間があるでしょう。では一体、私たちはどうしたら「演技」では無い会話ができるのでしょうか？
